Eleanor Sue dresses up as a series of characters, and each time her mother plays along, inviting in the new neighbor, witch, and "small delivery person"--but not the "crazy-eyed bear." Tusa's playful illustrations celebrate this loving mother/child relationship; preschoolers will delight in each make-believe scenario and the portrayal of fantasy play.

Via the motion of her swing, a girl goes on an imaginative airborne journey, beckoning readers to follow. The double-page spreads focus on colors ("I rise, I fall / in purple and gray") until the shades are "all tumbled together" in the leaf-swirling sky; then it's back to solid ground (and home). Tusa's quiet, lyrical text and warm, dreamlike color-washed illustrations are well matched.
