Quinnie Boyd's family runs beloved Gusty's Café in seaside Maiden Rock, Maine, but there's a fancy new restaurant in town threatening their business. Coincidentally, that's when somebody starts trying to sabotage Gusty's. Tension in Quinnie's diverse group of middle-school friends rings true as do her family's financial worries in the third small-town mystery starring Miss Boyd (The Maypop Kidnapping; Vampires on the Run).

Maiden Rock, Maine, gets lots of summer guests, but it's never had vampires before. Quinnie's (The Maypop Kidnapping) logical side tells her that new visitors Edgar and Ceil are just supernatural writers, but they dress in black and don't go near the sun. Quinnie and new friend Dominic's excitement is palpable as rationality wars with imagination throughout the quirky mystery.

When eighth grader Quinnie Boyd's beloved teacher doesn't show up for school, Quinnie suspects foul play. Since her mom (the mayor, sheriff, and postmaster of their small Maine town) dismisses her worries, Quinnie undertakes the investigation herself. Eccentric characters, an authentic setting, and brisk pacing propel Surrisi's quirky debut; well-placed clues allow readers to join Quinnie in her detective work.
