Each of eleven creatures describes its particularities (e.g., "I look just like an elephant / with fur and tusks so elegant"), but all conclude with a chastening "I am not a dinosaur!" (The non-elephant is a woolly mammoth.) While enjoying the tight riddle-rhymes and cut-paper art imbuing each creature with personality, readers may not realize they're learning something. More about the creatures is appended. Timeline.

This gimmicky book will nevertheless engage young readers with ten diverse portraits; cardstock pages are divided into three sections so that, for instance, an image can be composed of Van Gogh's hat, Mona Lisa's eyes, and George Washington's mouth. When the flaps are scrambled, the brief facing-page text doesn't always work, but the book's appeal is its visual fun. Notes about the art are appended.

An artwork reproduction featuring an animal baby faces two words in large type ("baby deer," "baby here") and a smaller captionlike sentence identifying the animal ("Baby birds hatch from eggs"). Cumulatively, the large-type words form a poem that weaves the art together thematically. Young children will enjoy finding playful animal babies interpreted in various media. Thumbnails identify each work at the end.

Full-page reproductions of Cassatt's paintings of mothers and children each face two words of simple text ("baby sits," "baby hands," "baby feeds") in this book published in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sure it's gimmicky, but babies (and their caregivers) will enjoy recognizing the familiar activities in Cassatt's work. Information about each of the sixteen pieces is appended.
