Alleanna Harris.
At age six, Patricia Bath (1942–2019) declared: "I want to be a doctor!" Though she faced obstacles because of her gender, race, and socioeconomic status, she succeeded, breaking boundaries in many arenas including becoming the first African American female doctor granted a medical patent. Quotes from Dr. Bath appear throughout, and colorful digital illustrations reflect her curiosity and compassion. Reading list, timeline. Bib.

The title's pun refers to the five classes of vertebrates--reptiles, fish, mammals, amphibians, and birds--that are here presented in rhyming verse that's sometimes clever, sometimes forced (e.g., "deers" with "ears"); the demands of verse can also lead to partial information. "Digi-woodcut" illustrations are colorful and appropriate, including the way they show motion. Websites. Bib.

My First Graphic Novel: Sports Stories series.
Illustrated by
Steve Harpster.
After his broken arm heals, Andre resumes his position as quarterback and leads his football team to victory. Large panels and speech balloons introduce the structures of graphic novels; instructions on how to read the words and pictures precede the story. This probably won't interest its target early reader audience, but slightly older sports fans may enjoy it.

This sophisticated picture book describes the life of Arn Chorn-Pond as a boy in 1970s Cambodia. At a children's work camp, he learned to play the khim (a traditional Cambodian instrument) and found that his talent could help himself and others temporarily escape the horror around them. Arihara's paintings effectively contrast the lush countryside with the severity of life in the labor camp.
