Odysseys in Outdoor Adventures series.
These intriguing titles about outdoor activities are an odd mix of history and beginner tips for equipment, enjoyment, and safety. For instance, Hiking includes a discussion of proper footwear plus references to biblical pilgrimages and wanderings; Deep-Sea provides solid information on rods and lures alongside novel and movie plots. Colorful stock photos add appeal to the presentations, but readers will likely skip around these texts. Websites. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Odysseys in Outdoor Adventures titles: Camping, Hiking, Canoeing, Rock Climbing, Caving, and Deep-Sea Fishing.

Thirteen-year-old rural-Virginia boy Buck's best friend, David, has moved away; Buck is bullied at school for his stuttering problems; and, in typical preteen fashion, his family gets on his nerves. Buck's passion is caving, but a cruel prank quickly turns this hobby into a harrowing survival adventure. Naylor, as always, is deft at combining action, dialogue, and theme in a compelling package.

Adventure Sports series.
In clear, engaging narratives that emphasize the dangers of adventure sports as well as the thrills, these books introduce training and equipment for each sport and discuss the challenges. The layouts can be unfocused, as text in various fonts and sizes vies with many photos, illustrations, fact sidebars, and quick "Thrill Seeker" bios. Still, adventurous kids will be inspired. Glos., ind. Review covers the following Adventure Sports titles: Canoeing and Kayaking, Caving, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, and Skiing and Snowboarding.
