Illustrated by
Grant Snider.
Little Blue, an iceberg, breaks off from his iceberg parents--"CRACK!"--and begins an odyssey that takes him far from home and through the water cycle. As with any hero's journey, there are obstacles to overcome: Blue survives melting, evaporating, and condensing. Now a cloud, Blue travels above the ocean and meets some friends who help him get back north to his (still iceberg) parents. This grand adventure has plenty of satisfying tension; the dynamic cut-paper, colored-pencil, and white ink illustrations add color and depth to the pages. An author's note talks about the water cycle, threats to polar ice, and three ways to "fight climate change."

Checkerboard Library: Science in Action series.
The physical science topics of sound, light, force, motion, and states of matter are explained through their applications in contexts with broader appeal (Glaciers and Stars are about matter more than their title phenomena). The textbooklike prose, accompanied by stock photographs, detailed diagrams, and well-aligned activities, emphasizes key vocabulary words. Although aimed at elementary-school readers, the concepts are much more advanced. Glos., ind. Review covers these Checkerboard Library: Science in Action titles: The Science of Color, The Science of Glaciers, The Science of Music, The Science of Race Cars, The Science of Roller Coasters, and The Science of Stars.

Giselle Potter.
With parents who revel in standing out, Ruby Small wants to be inconspicuous. She also longs for a pet--but the glacier fragment named Cecil that follows her home from a Norwegian vacation is not what she had in mind. The text, matter-of-fact but decorated with the occasional sparkle, is matched by lush, quirky watercolors that somehow give a chunk of ice personality.

This is the true story of John Muir, his friend Hall Young, their crew, and Young's dog, as they explore Alaska. Muir sets off with dog in tow in the numbing cold and snow to map glaciers and is surprised at the dog's courage. Dramatic landscapes and endearing images of the dog enhance a story that is more about man and dog than about Muir's extraordinary accomplishments.

When naturalist John Muir and Stickeen, his friend's dog, explore an Alaskan glacier, they come to a massive crevasse. The only way across is down one side and up the other. Muir cuts steps into the ice wall, but will the dog follow? The account is well told, and the acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations in icy browns, pinks, and blues may very well give the reader a chill.
