This South Korean pourquoi tale begins in the jungle when animals were all noisy ("The rhinoceros went BAM-BAM!"), except for Tapir and Little Tapir. One day a leopard attacks; his noisy pursuit attracts a hunter. Little Tapir, risking her own life, helps rescue the frightened leopard by teaching him to use quiet steps. Words and pictures provide excellent pacing, heightening humor, drama, and wonder.

Anyone who has ever hunted for inspiration will relate to this delightful story about creativity and friendship. Tapir is at a loss for what to write, frustrated that words come easily to friends Giraffe, Hippo, and Flamingo. Then Tapir discovers that maybe he "didn't need words after all" to express himself. Like her protagonist's drawings, Russell's screen prints are friendly and colorful.

Jungle Babies of the Amazon Rain Forest series.
Following the series formula, two-page chapters introduce the South American tapir calf and discuss physical characteristics, differences between adults and babies, habitat, behavior, defenses, and growth. The text is simple and easy to read; the close-up well-labeled photographs make this rather odd-looking mammal look cute. New readers will find this first nonfiction book accessible. A map and picture glossary support the text. Reading list. Ind.

Scientists in the Field series.
Photographs by
Nic Bishop.
In the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil, scientist Patricia Medici and her team study the lowland tapir, a long-snouted mammal most closely related to horses and rhinoceroses. Montgomery's dramatic account of tracking the elusive animals is interspersed with scientific information about tapir species. Bishop's photographs portray the hard-working researchers, the tapirs, and other fascinating animals, including anteaters, poisonous snakes, and armadillos. Websites. Bib., ind.
