Calkhoven introduces "the father of surfing" in this easy-reader biography. She focuses on Kahanamoku's unique swimming and surfing abilities, and his success in four Olympics in the early 1900s. The appealing design features a large font and Lewis's engaging cartoonlike illustrations. The book concludes with a mini Hawaiian glossary and short history and culture sections.

Don Tate.
In 1960, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composed a jazz rendition of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. They performed it in Las Vegas to amused and enthusiastic audiences. Celenza's text is appropriately jazzy, and Tate's curvy illustrations evoke the swing of the music. The true story is enhanced by the accompanying CD; the Sugar Plum Fairy morphs into Sugar Rum Cherry.

Crowe's respectful picture book biography brings to light a seminal figure in the history of surfing and Olympic swimming. She chooses not to make racism the focus of Duke's story but shows through understatement the emotional impact discrimination had on the native Hawaiian swimmer. Waldrep's paintings convey both dignity and dynamism, with ocean scenes hurtling from pages awash in sunlight. Timeline.

Literary license helps recast a mysterious incident from British history. After King Edward IV's death, his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, locks Edward's sons in the Tower of London. The daughter of a tower guard overhears Richard plotting against his nephews and helps them escape. Oil paintings convey the drama and danger of this spare story that, despite an author's note, may leave readers confused about the real history.
