Thingy Things series.
Playful and deceptively simple in both art and text, each small square book (two of which were previously published) features the title character ("Moosey Moose is mad"; "Buggy Bug has something to say"; etc.). Raschka's deftly minimal paintings show only the animal on each brightly colored page. Sweet and appealing but never cloying, these books are best shared one-on-one. Review covers these Thingy Things titles: Buggy Bug, Clammy Clam, Doggy Dog, and Moosey Moose.

Matt, fourteen, is spending the summer of 1973 working as a clam digger and grappling with the unusual sensation of falling in love with his first cousin, a beautiful fifteen-year-old visiting from Hawaii. Although occasionally marred by anachronisms in language and details, this coming-of-age story features an easygoing protagonist and evocative descriptions.

An elderly witch and her cat get ready to prepare some clams for dinner but are overcome by sympathy for them. When the clams start crying and then singing, the witch agrees to help them get home. A gentleness pervades this tale, emphasizing the personal transformations achieved by small kindnesses. The fine-lined black-and-white illustrations are lively and amusing.
