(2) YA The Rio Grande's gifted young poet Güero (They Call Me Güero, rev. 11/18) continues to render the stark beauty of the Southwest border landscapes and the pain experienced by loved ones in this evocative sequel. This time, the narrative centers on the deportation of Güero's ­middle-school sweetheart Joanna's (a.k.a. Fregona's) father, Don Adán, and la Fregona's impossible courage que no se raja to protect her family. Güero's poetry bears witness to the community's grief, anger, and activism inspired by the determination to reunify Joanna's family. Readers also see the more tender moments, which lend insight into the emotional landscape of Güero's young love for Joanna as it grows in maturity. Throughout, Bowles develops the plot using multiple poetic forms--sijo, linked sestains, sonnets, sedōka, rubaiyat quatrains. He also includes Chicano caló--a linguistic form and argot of Chicanx and Mexican Southwestern people--by incorporating Güero's and his friend Bobby Lee's Korean/Spanish slang. Güero embraces this mix of tradition and contemporary youth culture by, for example, dedicating his band's rendition of the classic Norteño corrido "El Palomito" to Don Adán, who like la palomita is apart from those who yearn for his return. Bowles confidently intersperses the voices of Güero's many family members, using Texas Spanglish colloquialisms with specificity. (2) YA When an overnight ICE raid in 2019 Brooklyn leads to her mother's arrest, seventeen-year-old Rania and her eight-year-old brother, Kamal, are left behind. Soon after, they are moved to a shelter, where they meet affable teen Carlos. The trio escapes and takes to the road through New England, initially in search of Rania and Kamal's estranged uncle. Rania and Carlos slowly forge a strong bond, as Carlos shares the story of his perilous journey from Mexico to escape gang threat and Rania relives fragmented memories of fleeing Pakistan after her political journalist father was murdered. At a temporary sanctuary synagogue, they are forced to make difficult choices in their search for a safe haven. The tightly wound plot creates an underlying tension as the young characters' situations constantly unravel. The story reflects the lives of many undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers forced to flee their homes in search of safety, zeroing in on the threat of retribution for dissenting politics. Budhos aptly conveys how the draconian U.S. immigration policies instituted in 2018 cruelly separated children from their families, and incorporates references to iconic art and poetry to reflect on the loss of home, on love, and on family.

Years of enduring physical abuse and emotional neglect at the hands of la malvada (his grandmother) and his tía following the sudden death of his mother have taught Santiago not to hope for better prospects. Yet Santiago's self-efficacy and resolve to survive ignite his courage to create a better life. Striking out on his own from Chihuahua, Mexico, Santiago meets María Dolores, a young mother who, along with her daughter Alegría, is on the way to el otro lado, the United States. Seizing the moment, Santiago decides to go, too. Diaz's third-person narration specifies the life-and-death stakes involved in their journey north--from the cramped, dusty bus ride through Mexico, to the border town where Santiago negotiates the clandestine passage that ultimately strands them in the Sonoran Desert, to their eventual capture by la migra, who threaten to sever their forged kinship. Diaz achieves what statistics about childhood refugees often don't, as the second half of the book illustrates the casual cruelties (metallic blankets, shoddy toothbrushes) and state-sanctioned violence of family separation. Personified through Santiago, the direct connections between immigrant detention and a country that treats imprisonment as an industry become undeniable. (2) YA Two years ago, seventeen-year-old Sia Martinez's mother perished in the Sonoran Desert, attempting to return home to (fictional) Caraway, Arizona, after being cruelly deported to Mexico. Sia's loving father and her loyal best friend, Rose, help support her through grief, even as the sadistic sheriff's son torments her at school (to his detriment; Sia is no slouch in the self-defense department). When a handsome new guy shows up and starts flirting, Sia is cautiously intrigued. Rose is suspicious (it has to do with the sheriff), but she's distracted by her own love interest, causing jealous Sia to ignore the warning signs. The first quarter of the book is realistic and engaging contemporary YA--and then Something Happens, and we're launched into sci-fi. Very short chapters--there are 224 of them--keep the pace snappy, and a cliffhanger ending, plus deliberate loose ends, point to more adventures to come. There's a content warning at the start ("Sexual Assault, PTSD, Physical Abuse, Parental Death, Racist Violence"), and those issues are addressed head-on. Through Sia's wry first-person narration, however, the tone remains mostly light: "Aliens, government conspiracies, secret experiments. That's all unbelievable enough as it is. No need to add meddling dead abuelas to the mix."

(3) YA Grande's parents left their children in Mexico with their neglectful grandmother while they illegally crossed the U.S. border to find jobs. Their mother returned home with a new baby; the still-struggling siblings' long-absent father eventually brought them to the U.S. The grim true story, adapted for middle-school readers from Grande's memoir, never devolves into melodrama, and the ultimately optimistic ending is inspiring.

Once onboard, the citizens are put in suspended animation for the four-century journey to the new planet, Sagan. When twelve-year-old Petra Peña wakes up, however, she learns that a cult-like group, The Collective, has taken over the ship, "purging" citizens who fail to comply and erasing all memory of Earth and its diverse inhabitants. As an aspiring storyteller and one of the only people who remembers life before The Collective, Petra must rely on her Mexican storytelling heritage to protect the remaining humans from the fate of living life as Collective drones. She follows in her grandmother's footsteps to become a cuentista, using storytelling to save humanity and remind her companions of the histories that were taken from them. Through The Collective, Higuera chillingly foregrounds seemingly benign attempts to eliminate violence and war via the homogenization of humanity. Through Petra, she effectively showcases how cultural memory, familial bonds, and story are essential to the progression of society, and how cultural difference is indispensable now and in the future.

(2) YA James, twelve, and his precocious sister Ava, ten, have moved from Texas to Oregon with their parents, and James is bitter about having his entire life uprooted. The siblings struggle to adjust to their new surroundings, amping up a prank war to the extent that they start hurting each other's feelings for real. When the kids begin finding mysterious and threatening letters from "the Keeper" around the house, their parents assume it's all just another prank. James and Ava realize they're going to have to solve the mystery of the letters on their own, and fast, because the Blood Moon is approaching and the Keeper has warned James that he must act before then. James and Ava's Mexican American family dynamic is realistically portrayed, and secondary characters are well drawn, as well. As they investigate their neighbors and the history of their almost-too-idyllic gated community, James and Ava learn that they aren't the first children to be threatened. The story's pace is slow but the mystery is intriguing, and determined readers will be satisfied with the surprising and sinister (involving a cult and human sacrifice) denouement.

(3) YA In 1915 Texas, eighteen-year-olds Joaquín and Dulceña are frustrated by obstacles their families cause in their romance. With a Romeo and Juliet framework, McCall portrays the injustices suffered by Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants at the hands of vigilante Texas Rangers during the Mexican Revolution. (2) YA In this story that blends realism and fairy tale, McLemore (Blanca & Roja, rev. 11/18) introduces readers to a sweet, warm young woman making her way through trauma. Ciela is La Bruja de los Pasteles, the pastry witch, who through her "don," the gift inherited from her great-grandmother, "knows what kind of pan dulce you want before you do." After she is sexually assaulted at a party, a shard of mirrored glass enters her eye, and Ciela loses her don. She also becomes inextricably tied to a new boy in town, Lock, another survivor of the same night. Only through friendship, honesty, and courage does Ciela begin to uncover the truth of what really happened. Themes of violation and consent are present throughout; Ciela's trauma is conveyed through cutting imagery, with comforting (if sometimes repetitive) descriptions of confections providing narrative reprieve. This story, which centers Mexican and Mexican American traditions and lore, includes a diverse array of gender identities, expressions, and relationships. The author's note tells more about "The Snow Queen /La Reina de las Nieves" (the novel's source) and reveals the personal nature of Ciela's journey, with insight into the often-overlooked experiences of women of color, boys, and queer and trans survivors of sexual assault.

When fire consumes southern California, Pearl abandons her family to warn Amiel of the approaching flames. Inspired by southern California's 2007 fires, McNeal captures the desperation of both love and survival with wrenching authenticity.

(1) YA Grounded in Pimienta's experience growing up in Mexico across the border from the United States, this graphic novel explores the relationship between young teenage twins as they traverse physical, personal, and cultural borders. Teresa and Fernando are recent sixth-grade graduates in Mexicali, Mexico. With his sister's decision to attend school north of the border, change is coming, and Fernando isn't pleased. In the fall, both siblings experience their share of ups and downs (skillfully depicted through a range of cartooning techniques, such as alternating panels and mirrored layouts). Teresa struggles with the commute and the English curriculum but cultivates a strong friend group. Fernando is less interested in school but develops a friendship with the slightly older and opinionated Alex. Confrontations over shared space, autonomy, and heritage come to a head after Teresa discovers a stash of marijuana that Fernando was given by Alex. The dramatic conclusion sees the siblings reach a newfound level of closeness through open and honest communication. Penciled and inked by hand, the illustrations feature a thin, organic line and a muted, full-color palette. A consistent three-tier panel structure creates a visual rhythm that is periodically punctuated by splash pages and spreads during moments of heightened emotion. Back matter includes an author's note, a hand-drawn map, and rationale regarding the use of language throughout the book.

Her father is a meth addict, her brother's a budding graffiti artist, her best friend's pregnant, and another friend is homeless after coming out to his father. Ari's first-person narrative--poetic, philosophical, honest--skillfully develops the relationship between the two boys from friendship to romance.

(2) YA As this sequel to Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (rev. 3/12) opens, the title characters take a memorable, romantic camping trip together in the desert before beginning their respective senior years at different high schools. After returning from the trip, narrator Ari comes out to people in his life, including his nemesis, whose brother has died of AIDS (like the first book, this is set in the 1980s), and in that moment a new friendship is born. The story explores many of Ari's relationships--with his parents, particularly his father, until tragedy strikes; with his brother in prison, with whom a visit proves disappointing. But it's his relationship with Dante that dominates his thoughts, often expressed in letters written down in his journal. Sáenz once again applies wisdom and humor to familiar themes such as forgiveness and redemption, the value of teachers and mentors, and the definitions of valor and manhood. The award-winning first book broke ground as a novel about LGBTQ+ people of color (Aristotle and Dante are both Mexican American). It's a mark of progress that nine years later, its sequel is not such a rare bird. Nevertheless, devoted fans of the previous installment will relish the experience of this one.

(2) YA Mexican American seventeen-year-old Salvador gets into two fistfights at the start of senior year. Things get more complicated after Sal's grandmother's cancer returns, best friend Samantha loses her mother, and his gay, adoptive dad begins dating again. Sáenz's distinctive prose is lyrical and philosophical; as self-effacing Sal narrates, readers feel the profound importance of family and friends and the transcendent power of love.

(2) YA As we find our way through these eleven disparate coming-of-age cuentos about Chicano culture, Saldaña forces us to experience the linguistic world of many of his protagonists--the decision to offer no glossary for the Spanish phrases that infuse his text serves as a curative disadvantage for the English-speaking reader. Never maudlin or overdrawn, these taut but lyrical tales bring light into the corners of kids' lives.

(2) YA Fifteen-year-old narrator Julia Reyes has spent her life being her "perfect" sister Olga's opposite. After Olga's death, Julia searches for information about her sister, and the simple narratives she has created about her family unravel. Sánchez paints an evocative portrait of a Mexican American family, effectively capturing bicultural tensions. The depiction of Julia processing her losses is hauntingly memorable and noteworthy in its authentic representation of too-rarely-written-about culture.

(2) YA In dual timelines, Schaper presents a story of culture, love, and feminism that crosses generations. Pili is a Mexican American teen in 1970s Laredo, Texas. Pilar is her namesake and her sister's granddaughter, living in present-day Houston. Both young women are strong-willed and talented. Pilar hopes to audition for the school play but feels discouraged because of low self-esteem and constant bullying; she is tormented because of her weight and becomes the subject of an embarrassing social media post. Pili eschews the expectations of her male-centric community and is especially wary of those traditions in light of her sister's marriage to an aggressively macho man. The character development is layered, and the settings are fully realized. The conflict between family duty and individual hopes and dreams will resonate with young people. Questions of faith and religion are also woven throughout. Short chapters with alternating narrators balance the story's pace, and spare writing and the revelation of long-held secrets make for a compelling tale, with an ultimately rewarding conclusion. The familial bonds, the protagonists' lively personalities, the whip-smart humor, and the cultural touchstones should appeal to fans of Isabel Quintero's Gabi, a Girl in Pieces.

(2) YA Sedgwick offers a timely look at teens across the border in his Doctor Faustus–inspired novel about former best friends forced to help each other when one is in debt to a Mexican gangster. Though the use of Spanish punctuation in English sentences might distract some readers, Saint Death presents a compelling interior story of resilience, poverty, loyalty, and the value of life.

(2) YA In this sequel to Disappeared (rev. 9/17), Mexican journalist Sara Zapata is now in the Fort Stockton Detention Center in Texas, "lost in a sea of asylum petitions," after she and her brother Emiliano fled Juárez with a cell phone belonging to the head of a drug trafficking ring. While Sara stays to plead for asylum, seventeen-year-old Emiliano proceeds alone to pursue the mysterious Big Shot behind the trafficking ring in the United States. Stork's suspenseful narrative alternates between Sara's and Emiliano's first-person points of view. Both protagonists have a strong inner compass guiding them to do the right thing, and providing a moral center to a tale that incorporates family, immigration, detention centers, human trafficking, and the web of evil that spreads from a city in Mexico right up to the Washington lawyers and government officials who profit from it. The story stands alone, but readers will likely want to read Disappeared for the bigger picture.

Tough-guy Pancho Sanchez, a ward of the state of New Mexico, is placed in an orphanage where he meets and befriends D.Q., a strange boy with terminal cancer. This novel of lonely quests and unlikely friendship will resonate with readers long after book's end.
