Then a misunderstanding results in his suspension; the classmates who initially brushed him off now rally around him, bonding with The Pines’s residents as well. Told from multiple perspectives, this story features plenty of humor; heartwarming intergenerational friendships; and an appealing and humble protagonist.

(2) 4-6 Illustrated by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. This imaginative collection presents thirteen stories from an all-star team of authors, including Nikki Grimes, Pam Muñoz Ryan, and Linda Sue Park. A heartfelt introduction by the coeditors sets up the theme and through line: these are short stories of middle-school kids growing in self-knowledge and empathy as they realize that they each have some sort of gift. ("Because everyone has a power, and that power matters, no matter how small or inconvenient it may seem.") The compilation is cleverly organized into two parts: "The Power of Discovering Who We Are" and "The Power of Being Who We Are." Abilities portrayed include time-jumping, shape-shifting, telepathy, the courage to speak truth to power, the ability to sense when avocados are ripe, and more. In Kyle Lukoff's story, a child learns to take steps to trust and affirm his own wishes about his gender identity; in Mitali Perkins's, a chameleon gives a girl magical cultural code switching abilities. Whether big or small, silly or serious (or both), every power is brought to life through a nuanced, diverse cast of characters and entertaining, thought-provoking plots. While the narratives lean whimsical, this entire project offers readers a careful, serious, and profound invitation to reflect on issues of identity, responsibility, social justice, and the myriad ways that people's gifts -- in both perception and application -- can affect others' lives, relationships, and the wider world. (2) 4-6 The day Salva Sanchez's mami didn't come home, her life was turned upside down. Now she's living out of a van in an RV campground with her investigative journalist papi. He's on assignment in Mule Valley reporting on an undocumented woman, Marcia Lopez, who is being held in a detention center and is set for deportation away from her three young children. Salva hangs out at the campground while her father works, her only comforts the songs of salsa legend Celia Cruz. One day Salva ventures out from the campground, and music pulls her inside the local middle school, where she befriends a group of kids in a band. Salva, who blends salsa beats into contemporary pop songs, replaces the belittling Darcy as lead singer. While planning a benefit concert for Marcia to afford a top-notch immigration lawyer, Salva unexpectedly uncovers the shocking truth about Mami. Mancillas handles the difficult topic of a parent who is incarcerated with care. The circumstances are presented directly and in an age-appropriate manner. In the end, Salva confronts Papi for lying to her and sets boundaries with Mami. She also stands up to Darcy's bullying and finds that her voice can help others. An uplifting exploration of family and friendship, mental health, and finding one's place.

(2) 4-6 Focused on a community center in the fictional town of Maple Grove, New Jersey, this powerful collection of short stories celebrates the broad diversity of middle schoolers from the South Asian community, commonly referred to as desi. Over the course of the eleven interrelated stories, protagonists celebrate major life events, holidays, and the more mundane at the community center. The dilapidated building serves as the focal point for a heavily Asian American community but is also a target of xenophobic opportunists, who use coded (and sometimes overt) language to try to shut it down. "Together at the Center" by Khan, "Out in the Open" by Rajani LaRocca, and "The Map of Home" by Sayantani DasGupta showcase the importance of open dialogue, community, and speaking out against anti-Asian/South Asian and Islamophobic incidents. Mitali Perkins's "Smile Number Seven" and "Answered Prayers" by N. H. Senzai address in-group judgment, both real and perceived, ethnic and religious; resulting self-defense mechanisms are handled with nuance and care in relation to single-parent households, disability, and domestic violence. Back matter includes a note from Khan and contributing authors' bios.

(2) YA Seventeen-year-old Jo is quick to list qualities she's learned are "the trouble with girls like me." She's "wild," "difficult," "a slut." A social outcast after a classmate leaked nude photos, she's mostly ignored by her parents and failing school. When her ex-best friend, Maddie, one of the popular girls, asks for help, Jo can't imagine why -- but before Maddie can explain, she disappears. Everyone thinks she ran away, but Jo believes it's not that simple. She teams up with Hudson, a friend (or maybe more) who has his own reasons to investigate Maddie's disappearance; together, they uncover a schoolwide scandal with dangerous implications. The mystery has all the elements of a good thriller: characters you can't necessarily trust; nail-biting suspense; and a twisty, surprising conclusion. But there's another layer: what happened to Jo at age fifteen, when she and Maddie stopped being friends. Jo's experience, once revealed, is clearly sexual assault, contextualizing her bitterness, rage, and self-blame. It takes time, and some help, for Jo to recognize it, too, and reclaim her body and her voice. Adamo writes with compassion for "girls like me" (an author's note acknowledges firsthand experience) who deserve to be listened to, believed, and loved -- and nothing less.

(2) YA For her capstone project on the last day of school, Niarah, who is "walking around life with a full plate of anxiety plus a side of depression and a scoop of OCD for dessert," must present an object that represents where she will be in ten years. But she does not have much hope for the future, so she pulls out a bottle of iodine from her survival kit and explains how it will save her in what she sees as "the inevitable doomsday scenario." Her presentation gains her the name Doomsday Girl and a trip to the guidance counselor's office, where she learns that she is in danger of failing sophomore year if she does not complete her capstone project and PE hours. As an alternative to summer school, Niarah joins a hiking club led by the very handsome Mac Torres. Despite herself, Niarah opens up to Mac, who offers to help her build her fallout shelter and count it toward her hours. Through Niarah's prickly, often darkly humorous, and eventually more vulnerable voice in her survival guide entries, text messages, and interactions with others, readers see a well-realized example of how it feels to be a teenager navigating the world with depression and suicidal thoughts. (2) 4-6 Luchy's birthday marks the end of summer vacation, and she's excited to start middle school; she and her two best friends, Mateo and Cami, are finally going to be at the same school. But when Cami comes back from visiting her family in Colombia, she's changed, and she expects Luchy to change too. Luchy, whose family is also Colombian, likes who she is -- at least, she thought she did. Her family and Mateo encourage her to be herself, but Luchy thinks she needs to "grow up" to try to save her friendship with Cami. Her efforts only lead to an embittered back-and-forth with her friend. When their schism deepens on the soccer field, Luchy is forced to accept that growing up looks different for everyone, and you never know what others might be going through. Set in Miami with lots of multicultural Latine details (Luchy's abuela cooks Cuban recipes that she learned from her friend; Mateo's family is Chilean) and naturally incorporated Spanish, this is an endearing middle-school transition story that ultimately lands in favor of expressing who you are and being open to new and changing friendships.

(1) 1-3 Henry series. Illustrated by Mika Song. In his second early-chapter-book outing (Henry, like Always, rev. 3/23), Henry -- a sensitive child who presents as being on the autism spectrum -- is ambivalent about a field trip to the natural history museum. "Henry was excited. Everyone in Classroom Ten would ride the bus to the museum. Henry was also worried. Everyone in Classroom Ten would ride the bus to the museum." Despite his concerns, Henry is looking forward to the dinosaur exhibit. When Samuel's dad (a field trip helper) asks Henry's group of three what they'd like to see, "'Dinosaurs!' said Henry. But he forgot to say it out loud." Each of his attempts to make his voice heard is inadvertently thwarted, and Henry patiently accompanies his group to the rock, bug, and mummy displays. Song's loosely rendered, limited-palette watercolor and ink illustrations telegraph emotion and deepen meaning for newly independent readers. When Henry eventually shouts "DINOSAURS!" the accompanying illustration makes clear his frustration, along with his classmates' bemused reactions. They finally find the dinosaur room (after getting a bit lost), and Henry's absolute joy is palpable. Bailey's relatable characters, familiar scenarios, and gentle humor make this a remarkably satisfying read...whether you embrace the new or not.

(2) K-3 The cover of this back-to-school picture book appears to show an ordinary class photo, with some kids smiling, others posing, still others jostling, a frazzled teacher...and one space alien. The front endpapers and title-page spread whoosh readers far into outer space, then (on the copyright and dedication pages) back toward our upper atmosphere, then down to Earth to hover above an elementary school. "This is the first day of the first week of school," begins the text, as a line of cars at drop-off snakes around a pleasant-looking building. Once inside, and all day Monday, we get to know a class of students by their interests and peculiarities: the Inventor, the Artist, the Sport Kings, plus the Teacher and Pat, the class-pet bearded dragon. Then on Tuesday a spaceship appears, and a new classmate -- Nobody -- joins the group. The story takes us through the days of the week, along with key activities (show-and-tell, recess), with readers following the characters' simultaneous actions, which continue and build with every page-turn. The cheerfully busy crayon illustrations offer many satisfying details to notice and track. There's lots of humor -- Pat, at first alarmed, grows attached to the alien -- and moments of poignancy: the Artist suffers a creative crisis that's resolved by Nobody; a social studies lesson by the Teacher about her family's immigrant experience makes the alien miss "his own gelatinous family" and then beam back up. It's a quirky story with way-out details that are ultimately grounded in home.

(2) 4-6 This story of shifting friendships follows two seventh graders: Lily, who feels left out now that Maddie and Sasha are on an elite soccer team together; and Will, who has a crush on Lily and whose every move is fodder for his dad's podcast. There's a dance coming up, and questions of who will ask whom are on everyone's mind, aided by gossipy Sienna, who takes out her own insecurities on both Lily and Will. Entanglements and misunderstandings ensue, largely because, to its credit, the novel allows friend-group dynamics to be complicated. Maddie and Sasha seem to be closer to each other than to Lily, but Lily is the one Maddie tells about her crush on another girl. Sasha and Sienna have a secret of their own, and when it's revealed, so are more aspects of Sasha's inner life. Some of the many characters in the ensemble beyond Lily and Will are touched upon only briefly, but we learn enough about them to understand what they're all learning: that each of them is the main character in their own life.

(1) YA In this coming-of-age novel set in an insular Orthodox Jewish community (adjacent to the one in The Life and Crimes of Hoodie Rosen, rev. 11/22), Yocheved "Yoyo" Gold is the eldest daughter of the local rabbi and has been cast in a particular and demanding role by those around her. After her best friend leaves town under questionable circumstances, Yoyo begins to notice cracks in the standards of behavior she has always accepted and feels an urge to call out the hypocrisy she sees. New friends -- one from outside her tight-knit community and one who is pushing boundaries within it -- lead her to question both her responsibilities and her beliefs. Social media, alcohol, and physical relationships feature heavily in the story, and each potential hot-button issue is handled with delicacy and nuance as Yoyo approaches these new experiences from her sheltered but mature perspective. While the book critiques Orthodoxy, it also treats its norms and traditions with respect. Even at the height of mean-girl drama, the characters have dimension and agency, and Yoyo models a level of integrity that feels both genuine and aspirational. The story's depictions of teens grappling with expectations are specific to this community and also represent universal themes of growing up, friendship, family pressures, and being true to oneself.

(3) PS Illustrated by Peggy Collins. After a few classmates turn down her offer to play fairies, Leah is so upset that she doesn’t notice Allie, who is also looking for a playmate. Leah falls to the floor and laments her fate before noticing Allie. The two then spend time together making fairy wings and playing pretend and eventually are joined by another classmate. Collins’s digitally created illustrations of Leah’s dramatics balance the difficulty of forging friendships with humor.

(2) YA Inspired by the author's own immigrant experience, this contemporary-set graphic novel centers Lia, a middle schooler whose family relocates from Romania to Canada. Enrolled in a "welcome class" to learn French with other non-native speakers, Lia struggles to adjust to her new life in Montreal. She grapples with homesickness, difficulties in connecting with classmates, and excruciating menstrual cramps. Her love for art offers a reprieve, and as Lia perseveres, she finds joy through reading her favorite fantasy series, listening to a beloved musical artist, and joining the school's magazine committee as an illustrator. Lia finds a supportive friend group as she turns thirteen and winter break approaches. She faces stressors -- including school, a crush, and a misunderstanding-fueled fight with a friend -- with growing self-confidence. Creative panel work adds depth to the eye-catching visual narrative, which features trendy fashions and uses tropes reminiscent of manga. Exaggerated, humorous forms depict Lia's big feelings. Vibrantly colored emanata enhance characters' reactions, and technological elements (text messages, video calls, and memes) are seamlessly integrated into the slice-of-life story. The art also clearly indicates languages spoken, as well as dialogue the protagonist does not comprehend. The middle-school friendship drama rings true, with flawed, endearing characters; some unresolved plot points hint at a sequel.

(2) YA Ash Woods is an unlicensed alchemist, a groundskeeper at a college that will employ him but not admit him to study and train to practice alchemy openly and legally. When Ramsay Thorne, a graduate apprentice, catches Ash working a bit of creation alchemy, he proposes a deal: if Ash will help search for the Book of Source, Ramsay will teach him what he needs to know to pass the licensing exam. In the process, Ash falls for the alchemist. Ramsay (who is genderfluid and uses alternating pronouns) has her own skeletons in her past and now seeks to destroy the Book. When the quest goes awry, Ramsay abandons Ash to the authorities to find the Book herself, and Ash is taken captive, kept under the watch of -- coincidentally -- Callum Kendrick, who broke Ramsay's heart back in boarding school, and whose gentleness Ash also finds irresistibly attractive. This elaborate adventure leads to some surprising places -- alternate universes; a threesome involving Ash (who is transgender), Callum, and Ramsay -- but readers will thrill to the high-stakes predicaments and appreciate the characters' attempts to remain true to themselves, no matter the cost.

(2) YA The Ybarras and the Moraleses, who own Cuban bakeries across the street from each other in fictional Port Murphy, Washington, have a bitter, decades-old rivalry. Ana Maria Ybarra (who also goes by Amy because no one in her mostly white town can pronounce her name correctly) usually honors the family feud. Until Miguel, a boy with whom she shared a steamy kiss in L.A. months ago, moves to town and reveals that he's a Morales nephew. Try as she might, she can't stay away ("He's technically a Fuentes," she justifies), especially when she learns he's a photography whiz. She's desperate for someone to fix her recipe videos so she can win a scholarship to culinary school. The two create a plan to film cooking videos in secret -- which, of course, devolves into clandestine making out. Ana Maria's family can't find out about either. Castellanos's (Isla to Island4, rev. 3/22) first novel-with-words is a sweet and satisfying rom-com with a relatively low-stakes star-crossed storyline. Ana Maria learns to stand up for her dreams for her future, her love life, and even the name she wants to be called, and Miguel is supportive as she figures it all out. Delicious descriptions of traditional Cuban foods and Ana Maria's updated creations abound. A recipe for guava cream cheese thumbprint cookies is appended.

(3) 4-6 The seaside town of New Rotterdam is known as one of “America’s Most Haunted Cities.” As Salem is famous for its witches and New Orleans for its ghosts, New Rotterdam has its urban legends—the Laughing Man, Headless Kate, and the Shadow in the Mirror. Friends Emrys and Hazel contribute pieces on local cryptids to the New Rotterdam Wiki Project and The Doomsday Archives, “where all the weird stuff that happens here gets cataloged.” After an apartment in their building is destroyed by a mysterious force, they discover their neighbor, Alyx Van Stavern, entombed in a book called Atlas of the End, a guiding text of the Order of the Azure Eye, an organization dedicated to protecting the world from dark forces. Van Stavern, a sorcerer and final member of the Order, inducts Emrys, Hazel, and their friend Serena and sends them on a mission involving a mysterious hourglass with blood-red sand, missing people, and a strange woman who eats children. The plot-driven narrative with interspersed illustrations (final art not seen), wiki excerpts, and interludes offers an action-packed debut for this horror series. As the last remaining members of the Order of the Azure Eye, Emrys, Hazel, and Serena are ready for adventures in future installments.

(2) 4-6 K is a bourgeois school boy in what appears to be late-nineteenth-century Bohemia. He is frail, anxious, and lonely, isolated at home, withdrawn at school. In each of five graphic short stories, Clement presents a situation of powerlessness, oppression, or ennui in which K encounters a small moment of grace. An errand to buy a carp turns into a nightmare of chaos and alienation, but when K finally makes it back home, pursued by angry townspeople, his mother stands up for him. Faced with the cruel, absurdist bureaucracy of his school, K is comforted by a helpful beetle who advises him to write about it all one day. Based loosely on the life and work of Franz Kafka, this volume makes adept use of the graphic format, as everything from the pace of the panels to the size of the type effectively conveys the feeling of being small, quiet, and timid in a world that can be giant, loud, and aggressive. This isn't parody, pastiche, or melodrama but rather a sympathetic and respectful portrait of the condition of being a child, a condition as familiar now as then. Pair with Theule's Kafka and the Doll for an introduction to a sad boy who became one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.

(2) 4-6 Illustrated by Brian Selznick. The student has become the teacher in this sequel to Frindle (rev. 11/96). Nick Allen is now Mr. N, a Hawaiian shirt wearing sixth-grade ELA teacher who makes his students bring a paperback copy of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style to class and doesn't allow the use of laptops, much to the chagrin of protagonist Josh Willett. Mr. N is the antithesis of computer-savvy coder Josh...or so Josh believes, until he stumbles upon Mr. N's secret past when, looking for a pen to complete an assignment, he finds his mother's childhood "frindle." While he and his friend Vanessa figure out what to do with the information in his "Frindle Files," Josh discovers there's a bigger issue to address: getting a pirated version of Elements removed from the internet. With help from his classmates and Mr. N and a rallying cry "for Wilbur!" (in honor of White's Charlotte's Web), Josh learns about the power of language to enact change and the potential ills of technology if used improperly. Rebellious, smart, persistent Josh is a classic Clements main character, and the parallels between this plot and the original are evident (student/teacher battle, learning from a reference book, national fame). In his straightforward storytelling, Clements pulls modern young readers in by connecting something they might relate to (coding philosophy) to the principles of good writing. This posthumously published novel brings Clements's impressive collection of middle-grade stories to a satisfying close. Black-and-white spot illustrations "drawn entirely with a frindle" are interspersed.

(2) YA Seventh grader Reese Buck has never told his best friends, Tony and Ryan, about his father's drug addiction problems; he doesn't want to be ostracized or seen as "that kid everyone felt sorry for." When Reese finds his father unconscious on the bathroom floor after a near-fatal overdose, his mother has finally had enough. She takes Reese to live, reluctantly, in a trailer on the farm of "the church lady," Mrs. Smith, and her grandchildren: thirteen-year-old Meg and fifteen-year-old Charlie, who has Down syndrome. Cochran ably constructs a sensitive portrayal of a self-involved, if well-meaning, adolescent who thinks he knows what's right and his tentative steps toward letting other people in. The healing power of community is at work here, as Meg and Charlie help in their own ways, and Tony and Ryan, absent for much of the story, appear for a grand time in the country, with friends old and new. An extensive author's note details the massive scale of the substance use and addiction crisis in the United States, where one child in eight under the age of eighteen lives with at least one parent dealing with a drug or alcohol problem.

(2) 4-6 Twelve-year-old Frani feels like Arañita, the metaphorical "spider that lives in my brain web," jumps from thread to thread, making her easily distracted and often affecting her self-esteem. When she helps her father, a forensic anthropology professor, however, she is fascinated by the study of cadavers and is able to focus. While working at the university's research facility, Frani and the son of another professor come across some dead bodies that have decidedly not remained dead. The research group launches into an exploit exploring the DUDs ("Definitely Undead Dudes"), even befriending and helping one. While not for the weak-stomached, all the gross-out components of the story -- vivid descriptions of the decomposing bodies, including bloated skin and maggot infestations -- are done with a minimum of sensationalism. Despite nefarious schemes and zombies, the story is charming and heartwarming overall. ADHD is never mentioned directly, but Arañita provides an apt and relatable metaphor. Offering this book to children who love adventure and a bit of horror is a no-brainer.
